Happy Memorial Day! BTS is taking over Las Vegas ahead of a special appearance at the AMAs where KATSEYE will perform. Let’s get into it.

BTS Sets Another Iconic Moment in Las Vegas

This is what a true takeover looks like.

Four sold-out nights at Allegiant Stadium of 65,000 seats for roughly 250,000 fans. The Sphere lit up in Arirang deep crimson. The Strip has been officially rebranded in partnership with HYBE. There are themed menus at restaurants and after-parties built around the concert run. And tonight, on Memorial Day, BTS walks into the MGM Grand Garden Arena for a special appearance at the 2026 American Music Awards — their first award show appearance in four years — nominated for Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer and Best Male K-Pop Artist.

To be clear: This is not the latest Vegas residency. But it does feel like a cultural occupation rarely seen for most artists.

In fact, it’s the latest iconic moment created by BTS during their Arirang comeback that I think first really resonated when the group met with Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and appeared on the balcony of the country’s National Palace, drawing a crowd said to be around 50,000 fans to Mexico City’s Zocalo square within hours. While reaction for BTS’ live comeback concert in Seoul for Netflix got soured by hyped-up estimates that over 260,000 people would be on the ground watching, but ultimately ended up between 40,000-100,000 in attendance, reportedly in large part due to safety measures. But photos like the ones below — especially when put in the context of the fanfare created by icons like The Beatles and Michael Jackson — really put the global impact BTS has made into plain perspective.

Whether it’s me or BTS’ ARMY spouting off fact after fact about how successful BTS has been, the images from this Mexico City appearance have been the most impactful of the era — in large part due to the fact that Mexican fans literally just showed up. Showing up is half the battle with fandom and proving something is real.

The Korea Herald published an interview today with Grammy-winning songwriter Derrick Milano — who worked on six tracks on Arirang including lead single “Swim,” more on his interview is below in the News section — who said he walked into the sessions not as a work-for-hire hitmaker, but, in his words, as “a student.” He made a point I think is worth sitting with when he compared BTS’ refusal to stay in one musical lane to Michael Jackson and Prince, saying the world's most iconic musicians became iconic precisely because they mix everything together. While this is essentially true of the K-pop scene at large, BTS truly embracing that versatility once again with Arirang — and the immense success of the era around the album including this latest takeover in Vegas — is its proof of concept.

While BTS is returning to the American Music Awards for a “special appearance” (which I imagine will include winning at least one award), they’re coming back not as eager stars hoping to prove their crossover potential but as established artists who a majority of viewers will recognize as having staying power in pop music. The 2017 AMAs marked the first U.S. award show to feature BTS as performers and the first time a K-pop group managed to earn a stage like that. Coming back almost a decade later should be a homecoming of sorts, but also a celebration. The journey from that first “DNA” performance to now owning an entire city for a week is the story of a true K-pop crossover told in under 10 years.

WHAT ELSE TO LOOK OUT FOR TONIGHT AT THE 2026 AMAs:

  • All seven BTS members will be sitting front row at the AMAs with John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen posted right behind them (@asantemadrigal)

  • Five members of KATSEYE will be performing and sitting in front of Twenty One Pilots. The girl group is up for three awards including Best Music Video, New Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Pop Artist

  • KPop Demon Hunters singers EJAE and Rei Ami are presenting, but third HUNTR/X member Audrey Nuna will not be in attendance. The movie’s soundtrack and its songs are up for four trophies including Best Soundtrack and Best Vocal Performance

  • TWICE, BLACKPINK, aespa, LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT are all up for Best Female K-Pop Artist, despite no confirmed attendance, which means this may be one of the awards announced early or pre-broadcast

Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slok said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

  • Net annualized returns on sold works held 12 months+ like 14.6%, 17.6%, and 17.8%.

IN THE NEWS

—Derrick Milano talks working on six tracks of BTS' ARIRANG and approaching sessions "as a student": “‘RM loves to rap. He cares about his rap pockets,’ Milano said. ‘I guess I was able to make it digestible, but still easy for fans to understand.’ Rather than forcing his own approach, Milano said he carefully adapted himself to BTS’ creative system. That openness became central to his role on the album. Milano explained that he began approaching melodies as if he himself were being featured on the tracks, drawing inspiration from artists known for unconventional vocal rhythms and melodic structures. The process eventually snowballed from one song to another. ‘It went from ‘Hooligan’ to ‘Aliens’ to ‘Normal’ to ‘Merry-Go-Round’ to ‘Swim’ to ‘2.0,’ he said.

“‘Because they're global icons, they're able to take risks that a lot of other artists can’t. I think K-pop is a fusion of different global sounds. When you look at Michael Jackson’s music...they would mix this with that, and add dance elements, and then add pop, and then add rock. I could see a song with BTS featuring somebody like Taylor Swift, but I could also see BTS featuring an artist like Future. I could see BTS doing a song with Billie Eilish, because now it's opening up the sound sonically, where you can just take chances and take risks.’ Rather than criticizing K-pop's growing use of English lyrics, Milano argued that multilingual music helps expand global collaboration. ‘I think it should have both,’ he said when asked whether K-pop should balance Korean and English lyrics. ‘As Americans, we need to learn the language as well.’ (The Korea Herald)

—South Korea's Galaxy Robot Park opened as the world's first robot theme park — and it has K-pop world tour ambitions: The 16,500 square meter facility in Seoul, run by Galaxy Corporation (which manages G-Dragon, Taemin of SHINee, and Parasite actor Song Kang-ho), opened with humanoid robots performing K-pop choreography, including songs by GD and Taemin. CEO Choi Yong-ho told reporters the plan is 1,000+ robot K-pop shows annually and a world tour by year’s end — with the vision of deploying robots to perform in places human stars can’t travel, including war zones.

Music critic Cha Woojin offered the sharpest take on the whole plan that pondered whether the integral K-pop fandom can be replicated via robots: “If you put a robot in an Elvis museum, fans would be repulsed. But K-pop is a visual packaging model, so robots feel less alien.” (The Guardian)

—SM Entertainment is launching a monthly K-pop concert streaming series on Samsung TV Plus, making K-pop more accessible globally without a ticket or subscription paywall: The collaboration will bring SM’s large roster of artists — which includes Girls’ Generation, SHINee, aespa, NCT, Red Velvet and more — into living rooms through Samsung’s ad-supported free streaming service, with a new concert every month. For an industry still figuring out how to monetize global fandom live moments beyond touring and DVD sales, this is worth watching. (Branding in Asia)

—The Korean government’s K-EXPO USA landed in Los Angeles this weekend — and it (thankfully) looks nothing like the first K-EXPO: The 2026 K-EXPO USA ran from May 23-27 at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles, organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, with the government targeting $100 million in export consultations. Despite falling on the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the venue was packed from the first day — with lines stretching over 20 meters for the Nongshim Han River ramen booth alone. (Seoul Economic Daily)

“The B2C portion of this K-EXPO ran through May 24, while the B2B export consultation event will be held over two days, May 26-27, at the JW Marriott Hotel. About 130 companies are participating across food, cosmetics, drama, games, and other sectors, with the government aiming to achieve $100 million in export consultations and 1,000 consultation cases.”

Who Remembers… While I do not believe they are related, this is event is a long ways away from the 2018 K-Expo that took place in Queens, NY, but became infamous for mismanagement, security and vendor failures with Reddit users who attended calling it one of the most disorganized K-culture events ever staged on U.S. soil. Eight years later, the government appears to have at least recaptured the name.

BITS and BOPS

—LE SSERAFIM now has 12 versions of “BOOMPALA” in the world. The new single’s remix EP dropped May 23 and today five individual member solo versions hit streaming services. That’s Sakura, Kim Chaewon, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha and Hong Eunchae each getting their own moment with the “Macarena”-sampling song. The track has the potential to be their fourth Hot 100 entry — their collab with BTS’ j-hope “Spaghetti” peaked at No. 50 last year, so the infrastructure is there if the streams follow. My favorite version is Sakura’s which has a late ‘90s/early ‘00s R&B/hip-hop beat vibe to it

—STAYing power: A 100-million-year-old bug with crab claws has been officially named after Stray Kids. Scientists at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich discovered the prehistoric insect — Carcinonepa libererrantes — preserved in amber from Myanmar, and named it after the group because its claw posture matched their signature pose. Stray Kids are now immortalized in paleontology. (SSBCrack News)

—BLACKPINK’s Jisoo went to Jeju Island this weekend and made a pilgrimage to one of the filming locations from BLACKPINK House, the group’s first reality show from 2018. She posed in front of a market stall that displays nostalgic shots of the group from their early years

The artwork announcing the album schedule included a custom “JAY B SCENT No. 001” tied to the release, which would be fascinating if he is actually embracing fragrance releases for all his upcoming works.
